How to clicker train your cat

So, it has been brought to my attention that bengals are perfect candidates for clicker training due to their intelligence and need for constant stimulation. I also may or may not own a cat leash that I want to break out this summer….

Anyway, here is what you will need to clicker train your cat:

1. Your cat needs to be responsive to treats.

Or some other form of reward to be able to connect a behavior to the clicker to the reward.

2. You need a clicker.

I got the clicker pictured above from The Denver Dumb Friend's League for $3. But you can grab a four pack from Amazon for under $9 here.

3. You need some delicious treats.

I use Blue Buffalo's Kitty Yums in Tasty Chicken, but whatever your cat fancies will suffice. However, avoid feeding your cat human food. Please refer to my last blog for a list of things not to feed your cat.

From my understanding if your cat performs a desirable action you click the clicker and then feed them a treat. To strengthen the connection keep repeating these steps to ultimately have your cat perform an action with just the sound of a clicker. For a more detailed description on clicker training go here or visit your local shelter for cat clicker training classes.

Hi! I am a twenty-two year old student that has had about twenty years of experience with caring for cats. I am not a licensed vet, but a crazy cat lady so please do not use this site as a diagnostic tool for your cat.
