There are so many different brands and subcategories of pet food it is easy to get lost in bold claims and marketing tactics. However, you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars a month to make sure your cats belly is healthy and full. Here a few tips that I have gathered on how to purchase the best food for every budget:
1. Make sure the first ingredient in whatever you feed your cat is a protein.
Whether it be chicken, turkey, salmon, or beef make sure it is meat! If your kitty has a sensitive stomach stick to turkey or chicken. If you have a "mature" feline salmon is a good choice since it is high in omega fatty acids.
2. Avoid fillers.
The two most common ingredients in cat food is corn and rice. I have heard that corn is a big no-no when your cat is facing any digestive or general health problems. Rice is another filler, but brown rice is a good source of fiber and easy on the tummy.
3. Cats need fruits and vegetables too!
Make sure somewhere on the ingredient lists there is at least two vegetables and two fruits. Tomatoes, berries, and leafy greens are all good for your feline friend's food bowl.
4. If you want to treat your cat, lunch meat is your best bet.
Even though I am completely guilty of letting my cat munch on a sub sandwich every so often, DO NOT feed your cat human food. Lunch meat is fine but here is a list of things your cat cannot eat:
- tuna
- onions, garlics, chives
- alcohol
- dairy products
- grapes and raisins
- caffeine
- chocolate
- avocados
And the list goes on and on. If you want to treat your cat to some fine dining make sure to check with your vet first! Or check out www.petmd.com
Right now Nefie's diet consists of Goodlife, which is about $10 for a seven pound bag, and Blue Buffalo Kitty Yums in Tasty Chicken, which is about $7 for a two ounce bag.
